Ludisia discolor "Red Vein" (Jewel Orchid) is a particularly attractive form of the jewel orchid, distinguished by its velvety, dark green leaves with striking red veins. It is cultivated not for its flowers, but mainly for its decorative foliage, making it an excellent choice for terrarium keeping.
Care in the Terrarium
Location: Shady to semi-shady, no direct sunlight. A north or east-facing window or artificial lighting in the terrarium is ideal.
Humidity: High (70–80%), therefore perfect for closed or semi-closed terrariums. Regular misting or a humidifier is recommended.
Temperature: Optimal between 18–24 °C (64–75 °F).
Substrate: Loose, well-draining substrate such as orchid soil mixed with moss or coconut fibers.
Watering: Keep evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. Best to use lime-free water.
Growth habit: Creeping, forming dense mats over time. Small white flowers appear in winter but are rather inconspicuous.
Delivery in 5 cm Pot
Plants are already rooted and can be placed directly into the terrarium or repotted into larger containers.
Due to their compact size, they are ideal for starting in a plant aquarium or an orchid terrarium.
