Description
This plant set is particularly suitable for keeping mantids and praying mantises. The robust bromeliads can store moisture and serve as a hiding place for the praying mantises. The cushion moss also stores moisture and keeps the floor of the terrarium moist, making it a good underground for laying eggs.
The set contains the following plants (all natural and not treated with pesticides):
Neoregelia ampullacea
Depending on the location, this pretty Neoregelia stands out with its special pattern, developing purple stripes on its bright green leaves
Ben's tips on plant care:
- Location/light requirements: bright, without direct sunlight
- Substrate: tied up on Xaxim or in peat-free potting compost with a low pH value and good drainage
- Temperature: optimal at 18-26° C (day)
- Watering: when tied up, spray approx. once a week (avoid leaves or allow to dry well!), otherwise only water moderately when the substrate begins to dry, using lukewarm water with little lime. Avoid waterlogging at all costs. Water less in winter.
- Humidity: requires high humidity, use a humidifier or place it in the terrarium
- Addition of nutrients: Fertilize only moderately every 4-5 weeks with diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Avoid draughts.
Monstera adansonii Babyplant
The Monstera is perfect for the indoor climate as it has a high air-purifying function because its large leaves absorb many pollutants and release oxygen. This Monstera is also a little climbing artist: if you give it space to climb, it quickly climbs upwards, which is why it is also known as the monkey mask.
Ben's tips on plant care:
- Location/light requirements: Partial shade, avoid bright/direct sunlight.
- Substrate: Ben's Babyplant Soil, special soil, later Ben's Philodendron & Monstera Soil, special soil
- Temperature: optimal at 22-28° C, do not allow to cool below 18° C
- Watering: Water well approx. once a week, keep the substrate moist but avoid waterlogging. Water less in winter.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity.
- Addition of nutrients: In spring/summer approx. every 2 weeks with liquid fertilizer.
Fittonia albivensis
This Fittonia is a delicate beauty whose cream-colored leaf veins contrast with its dark green leaves. In the terrarium, it can quickly cover the ground due to its creeping, nimble growth.
Ben's tips on plant care:
- Location/light requirements: Partly shaded to bright, without direct sunlight
- Substrate: high-quality, well-drained potting soil (ensure drainage!)
- Temperature: optimal at 24-28° C (day), 18-22° C (night)
- Watering: water moderately approx. once a week as soon as the upper substrate layers are dry, less frequently in winter, but never allow the substrate to dry out completely and avoid waterlogging at all costs
- Humidity: requires high humidity, spray regularly (but leaves should be allowed to dry afterwards!) or use a humidifier
- Addition of nutrients: in spring/summer, fertilize moderately every 2 weeks with diluted organ. Liquid fertilizer moderately, less frequently in winter
- Avoid draughts at all costs
Philodendron scandens Brasil
The charming Philodendron Scandens Brasil is so named because its light cream to lime green variegation usually appears in the center of its leaves and - like the Brazilian flag - is surrounded by dark green. The variegation develops more clearly in a bright location, but as with all philodendrons, direct sunlight should still be avoided.
Ben's tips on plant care:
- Location/light requirements: partial shade to light, avoid direct sunlight.
- Substrate: Ben's Philodendron & Monstera Soil, special soil
- Temperature: optimal at 23-27° C (day), 16-18° C (night), do not allow to cool below 12°C
- Watering: Keep the substrate moist and water when the top layer of substrate begins to dry, using lukewarm, low-lime water, but avoid waterlogging. Water less in winter.
- Humidity: requires high humidity, spray regularly (but leaves should be allowed to dry afterwards!) or use a humidifier
- Addition of nutrients: In spring/summer approx. every 4-6 weeks with liquid fertilizer.
- This Philodendron is somewhat sensitive to waterlogging, so appropriate drainage is particularly important.
Hypoestes phyllostachya red ground cover
Hypoestes is also known as the spotted flower because of its pretty pink-red spots. It originates from Madagascar and is quite robust in its needs.
Ben's tips on plant care:
- Location/light requirements: bright, but avoid direct sunlight.
- Substrate: Ben's Premium Sphagnum Moss
- Temperature: optimal at 19-22° C (day), 17-18° C (night), do not allow to cool below 15°C
- Addition of nutrients: In spring/summer approx. every 3-4 weeks with diluted organ. Liquid fertilizer.
Cushion Moss S ( not on the photo )
The pretty cushion moss is perfect as a ground cover in the terrarium due to its decorative and moisture-retaining properties. It can grow on topsoil as well as on pebbles, gravel or sand. It is important to ensure sufficient drainage and to maintain moisture by spraying regularly.
Depending on availability, the plants may be replaced with similar, equally suitable plants.
